"The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth."
Building Futures
Supporting young people through practical skills, trusted relationships, and community connection.
What We Do
The Walden Shed exists because early, relational, community-based support is needed to reduce risk and rebuild connection.
Practical Skills
Young people engage in hands-on activity, skill building, and responsibility-based work in a supportive environment.
Trusted Relationships
We work with small numbers of young people, allowing consistent relationships, clear boundaries, and continuity of care.
Pathways Forward
Beyond the Shed, supported pathways can develop into work experience, apprenticeships, employment opportunities, and long-term mentoring.
Who Can Refer
The Walden Shed is a referral-only project. Referrals are accepted from professionals and services who already know the young person.
Community Involvement
Local people are actively encouraged to be involved in the Shed as volunteers, mentors, and skills-sharers. Tradespeople, craftspeople, farmers, business owners, and skilled community members are invited to teach practical, confidence-building skills.
Over time, these relationships can develop into apprenticeships, employment opportunities, or long-term mentoring. The long-term aim is for young people to move from being seen as a problem within the community to becoming contributors to it — and eventually mentors themselves.
"Community-based, preventative work matters because it allows intervention before crisis, within relationships rather than referrals, and through consistency rather than short-term input."
